Public access to computers is available in all our libraries and is free to use.

 

Who can use the computers?

All library members. The service is free with black and white printing at 10p, and colour at 50p per sheet. If you are not a member, you will need to join before you can book a computer. You must also agree to abide by our Acceptable Use Policy.
Visitors to Aberdeenshire are also welcome to use the computers free of charge.  You will be required to sign in and provide your name and permanent address.

Can children use the computers?

The service is available to all library members and there is no age limit (although if you are under the age of 16, a parent or guardian must sign your library membership application form).  There is filtering software in operation on the Internet.

top of pageWhat can I use the computers for?

The computers are all connected to the Internet.  Allowing you to:

  • Surf the Web for free
  • Stay in touch with family and friends through email
  • Get free access to a range of subscription-based reference databases
  • Use the Scanners

You can also save any documents to our secure area, so that only you can see them.  Each member is entitled to 30MB in which to save to.  Or alternatively, you can use your USB stick or burn a CD on some of our computers.

How do I book a computer?

You do not need to book in advance to use a computer; however at certain libraries we strongly recommend advance booking.
You can phone your local library or visit the library to make a booking in advance.  When you are using one of our computers you could book for your next visit before you log off.

top of pageFor how long can I use a computer?

Computers can be used from 30 minutes to 2 hours a day, depending on which library you visit.  This may be extended if the computers are not busy.

What if I don't know how to use computers?

Computer classes are generally run by and based in, the local community centre or College. The classes range from a beginner’s course like computing for the petrified, up to nationally recognised qualification e.g. European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL).

We provide access to devices and software designed to make our computers available to all our members.  These include:

  • Large keyboards
  • Magnifying software
  • Narrator software
