Skills Zone

Skills Zone – books for everyone

We have books that everyone can enjoy reading, for all reading levels, and books for teaching or learning grammar, spelling, English Language, Maths, and other life skills such as confidence-building, driving tests, using computers.  These are available ‘off the shelf’ in our ‘Skills Zone’ collections (Westhill, Peterhead, Kemnay, Mintlaw, Stonehaven, Fraserburgh and Aboyne) at present, but can also be delivered to any branch library near you.  Ask at your local library or go online to our catalogue.

Fiction

Quick Reads

These short novels are great if you don’t have time to read or if your reading is a bit ‘rusty’.

Easy Reads

These are numbered from 1 (easier) to 6 (for more confident readers).  Pick a level that you enjoy reading at.

Talking books

Listened to any good books lately?  Read one of these books and listen at the same time, to help with your reading or English.

Selection of fact-based books

Biographies

Life stories of the rich and famous

Life Skills

Mix of life skills, such as cookery, driving, computers, money management, lifestyle books. 

Grammar and Dictionaries

These can be borrowed. 

Teaching and Learning materials

These books can be used as self help, but are probably best to use to help another person brush up their basic reading, writing, number skills, such as working with a tutor, or at home in the family.  There are lesson-style books on language, reading or numbers.

ESOL

As above but specifically for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). 

Professional Development

Books which give background information on topics of adult literacies, eg Dyslexia.  Books about adult learning, adult literacies, working with adults.
