Surface features are limited to a low eroding bank running round the more accessible SW portion of the site.

The usable area of the summit amounts to approximately 70 m by 15 m. Excavation has indicated occupation during the Iron Age, which involved a stockade defence. In the Early Historic Period, the Picts re-fortified the site with an elaborate timber-laced wall, and built a hall-house within.

13 miles W of Banff: A942. This promontory fort lies on the coast, seaward from the village of Portknockie. Access is by a rough track which leads from Patrol Road to the harbour.
