Forestry

The Archaeology Service examines all forestry applications within Aberdeenshire, Moray and Angus council areas.

The Woodland Grant Scheme (WGS) aims to encourage the creation and management of woodland on sites all over the country. The grants are for establishing the trees and the ongoing process of looking after them. Forest Design Plans are long term mangement plans for large areas of foresty and normally because of their size there are numerous archaeological sites that fall within them.

When the Archaeology Service is consulted over a WGS or a Forest Design Plan we:

  • carry out a search of all known sites within the scheme's boundary/management area
  • check and record the 1867, 1888, 1928 & 1938 OS maps for sites including old farmsteads
  • check and record new sites from our vertical aerial photograph collection
  • where necessary visit in person the scheme/management area on the ground

Archaeological sites affected by the schemes/plans may have trees removed from them and a buffer zone established around the site's boundary.
