Law Enforcement

ts

Officers carry out visits to trade premises such as shops, factories and licensed premises, to ensure they are complying with the criminal law.

Initially advice and assistance is offered to businesses to help them comply. However for more serious offences, or where the law is persistently breached, we can report traders to the Procurator Fiscal for prosecution.

This could be, for example:

  • selling unsafe goods

  • supplying short-measure whisky or fuel

  • "clocking" cars

  • misleading adverts or prices

  • selling counterfeit clothes or software

We are also the licensing authority for petroleum, poisons and explosives and carry out regular inspections to ensure these goods are being handled competently and stored in a safe manner.
