Who can get help with interviews by the police?
If you are defined as having a mental disorder, such as mental illness, a personality disorder, learning disability, acquired brain injury, autistic spectrum disorder or dementia, the appropriate adult service can help you.
The appropriate adult makes communication easier between you and the police. They ensure understanding by both parties and equality for the person being interviewed.
Appropriate adults help with all types of interviews - witness, victim, suspect and accused.
It is the responsibility of the police to request an appropriate adult attends the interview.
More information on appropriate adults is on the Scottish Government's website.
