House in handsThe Independent Living Fund is designed to help you, if you are severely disabled, to live independently at home. You can use payments from the fund to employ people or use an agency to give you personal and domestic care in your home.

You can apply to the Independent Living Fund if you:

  • are over 16 years and under 65 when your application is received
  • receive or are entitled to the care component of Disability Living Allowance at the highest rate
  • need more care at home than he /she can afford and the local authority can provide in order to live in the community rather than in residential care
  • live alone or with people who are unable to fully meet your care needs
  • have joint savings /capital of less than £22,250
  • already get social services support to the value of at least £320 per week (services such as day centre provision, residential respite or direct payments)
  • are able to live independently for at least the next six months
  • are at risk of entering residential care, or are currently in residential care and wish to leave and live independently

To enable us to operate within our annual budget, the Independent Living Fund will prioritise:

  • disabled people who are in paid work for at least 16 hours a week, and
  • people who are in receipt of Income Support or have an income of a similar level to Income Support
