Career in Building Standards
If you have a background in the construction industry and are keen to be involved in one of Scotland’s most progressive and award winning Councils, then a career in Building Standards could be your next opportunity.
Building Standards is a statutory service administered by local authorities to ensure the health, safety, welfare and convenience of any person who inhabits or frequents the built environment, and for the conservation of fuel and power.
In the Building Standards Service we carryout a number of core duties, some of which are:
- Building Warrant Verification
- Completion Certificate Verification
- Building inspections
- Enforcement
To carry out these duties it is essential that the Building Standards team have a diverse range of knowledge and experience in the construction industry.
What qualifications and experience do you need?
To become a Building Standards Surveyor you would normally require a degree in a construction related discipline, however, a higher national diploma in a construction related discipline coupled with relevant experience in the construction industry is generally acceptable.
To become a Building Standards Technical Assistant a higher national certificate in a construction related discipline coupled with relevant experience in the construction industry is generally required.
Recently, Aberdeenshire Council has funded a number of staff to study on a part time basis to gain further qualifications leading to Chartered status of a recognised body.
The Building Standards Service can offer job opportunities as Building Standards Surveyors, primarily processing building warrant applications and as Building Standards Technical Assistants primarily carrying out site inspections of building warrant approvals through to completion certificates.
Future Career Opportunities
Aberdeenshire Council is always keen to be involved in the training of its own staff and regularly assist staff in achieving further qualifications leading to, for example Chartered status of a recognised institute. If full Chartered membership is obtained an increase in salary in line with the Professional Development Scheme would be given.
