Career in Building Surveying

Building Surveying is a challenging and
rewarding career, as Building Surveyors or
Building Surveying Technicians have the
opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of
activities within the construction industry. These
include the provision of building condition
survey and dilapidation reports, production
of drawings and specifications for building
projects, and providing advice on modes of
building failure and defect resolution.
Design, specification and project management of building works using computer aided design and project management by systems also form part of the work of a Building Surveyor.
As a Building Surveyor or Building Surveying
Technician working for Aberdeenshire Council,
you will be part of a highly motivated team
whose prime function is to ensure that the
buildings within the Authority’s portfolio
are continuously available for use by the
building’s occupants.
In order to achieve this
requirement the Surveyor or Technician will
play a vital role in managing the Authority’s
building maintenance programme, in the
provision of reports on building condition,
and in finding solutions to overcome failure of
elements within a building.
Aberdeenshire Council’s building portfolio
encompasses a large variety of building types,
including listed civic buildings, schools, office
complexes, residential care and housing
complexes, all located throughout the
Authority’s area.
What qualifications and experience
do you need?
As a school leaver with 4 Standard/Credit
Grades you could start your career with
the Property Service as a trainee technician.
Through a programme of day release study
you could gain ONC/HNC qualifications in
Building.
On completion of the HNC you will
be a qualified Building Surveying Technician.
Initially you would be supervised by a Building
Surveyor and allowed to undertake more
complex and demanding work as your
experience widens.
With 4 Higher Grades you could attend a full
time course in Building Surveying or Building
Management.
An Honours Degree in Building
Surveying or Building Management would
allow you to join the Property Service as a
trainee Building Surveyor, whilst undertaking
a further period of training in the office
to gain full professional qualifications as a
Chartered Building Surveyor (Membership of
the Institute of Chartered Surveyors, MRICS) or Chartered Builder (membership of the
Chartered Institute of Building, MCIOB ).
Future Career Opportunities
Aberdeenshire Council is always
keen to be involved in the training of its own
staff and every support, both financial and
office based, is given to trainees to help them
work towards a professional qualification.
