Career in Personnel
The Personnel Service, offers comprehensive
and professional assistance and advice to
Services and employees within the Council.
It comprises:
- Personnel & Personnel Support
- Management Services
- Health & Safety
- Development and Training
The Personnel Team are involved in
issues such as Employment Law, Recruitment
and Selection, Grievance procedures and
disciplinary procedures to name a few.
The service also develops and implements
employee policies, strategies and procedures to
meet current and future needs of the Council.
Personnel Support Team provide
an administrative support service which
includes issuing contracts, maintaining and
updating employee and post records, and
administration of maternity leave and pay.
Management Services are involved in the
review and development of the organisational
structure, including review of services, grade
assessment of posts and matching employees
to posts.
The Health & Safety Team are responsible
for advising on current health & safety
legislation, investigating accidents and recommending improvements, auditing and
inspecting premises and monitoring health
issues such as noise and temperature.
Development & Training are responsible
for the co-ordination, development and
delivery of training and development
opportunities for all employees.
What qualifications and experience
do you need?
Personnel Officer:
Membership of the Chartered Institute of
Personnel and Development is required.
Management Services Officer:
Membership of Chartered Quality Institute
or CIPD.
The above qualifications can be acquired
through part-time study taking between three
and four years or a Post Graduate Diploma in
Personnel Management/ Quality Management.
Employee Development Officer:
A training qualification and also experience/
qualification in the area of delivery is required.
e.g. Health & Safety (First Aid, Handling, Plant
Assessment), ICT, Social Care, Interpersonal
Skills and VQ’s.
Health and Safety Advisor:
There are three ways in which to qualify
in health and safety and different levels of
qualification:
Study is on a part-time basis - evenings, day
release or two week blocks at residential
courses. An example of a professional
qualification you may study for is membership
of the Institute of Occupational Health and
Safety.
On occasion we employ trainees who are
placed on the Development Scheme. They
progress through this whilst studying for their
final qualification.
Future Career Opportunities
There are opportunities for all our staff to
continually develop and progress towards
a professional qualification. Our very own
Margaret Connon is a great example of how
we help to develop our staff. We supported
Margaret to study for her CIPD qualification
and now she is a fully qualified Personnel
practitioner currently on secondment as a
Personnel Manager.
