you.
We are one of the largest education authorities
in Scotland delivering education of over 40,000
pupils in:
- 152 Primary Schools
- 4 Special Schools
- 17 Secondary Schools
We are engaged in an extensive programme
to upgrade our schools to equip them to
deliver an education fit for the 21st century,
with state of the art ICT provision and
teaching facilities.
Primary trained teachers work in a varied
range of schools from small rural primaries
to large establishments in towns, teaching
children from 3 to 5 in nursery classes and
5 to 12 year olds in primary classes, across a
wide range of curricular areas.
Secondary trained teachers work in our 17
academies teaching 12 to 18 year olds and
specialise in one or two subject areas.
What qualifications and experience
do you need?
Teaching in Scotland is an all graduate
profession. To qualify as a teacher you have
to complete a programme of Initial Teacher
Education (ITE). There are two types of
programme.
- Four year Bachelor of Education (BEd)
programme for Primary teaching. There are
also BEd programmes for some secondary
subjects such as Music, Physical Education
and Technological Education. - One year Professional Graduate Diploma
programme for those who already hold
a degree to become either a Primary or
Secondary teacher.
Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Paisley, Stirling and Strathclyde Universities all offer these courses.
