Eligibility and support

Who is eligible to access the service?

Young people who are looked after or accommodated (in care) at or after their school leaving date until they are 19 years old - known as a compulsory supported person.

If the young person needs further support we can provide services up until they reach their 26th birthday  - known as a discretionarily supported person.

What type of support is given?

We have to provide advice and guidance to young people leaving care. This may help a young person to access suitable:

  • accommodation
  • education
  • training
  • employment

Sometimes young people need emotional support and help with rebuilding relationships with their families or returning to their communities.

Some young people need a higher level of support. They may need help to access specialist services such as mental health or substance misuse. The Throughcare and Aftercare service will speak on behalf of the young person to help them get the support they need.

The service can also help the young person to gain the practical skills to manage living independently.
