£8 Million Energy Savings by the Energy Conservation Team
Over the last five years the Energy Conservation Section have successfully implemented measures which have avoided energy and water increases of over £8 million. The Council currently spends over £4 1/ 2 million each year on energy and £1 1/ 2 million on water charges. Our total annual energy consumption is over 162 million kWh.
Through fuel procurement contracts our annual energy costs are over £1 1/ 2 million less than tariffs published by suppliers and all our electricity is now supplied from renewable sources.
The installation of swimming pool covers, loft and wall insulation, low energy lighting, improvements to heating systems and controls and water saving devices, have reduced energy consumption by over 2.6 million kWh and saved over £200,000.
Over the last two years increased water charges of £2 million have been avoided by replacing more than seventy over-sized water meters, claiming rebates for water leaks and checking water invoices.
Grants of over £200,000 have also been secured to invest in energy saving measures in schools. This includes a proposed wood-burning boiler at Aboyne Academy.
The Scottish Executive recently awarded the Council over £640,000 to spend on energy measures with short paybacks.
In 2004, over 1,650 school pupils attended energy efficiency presentations in 21 schools. It is hoped that the introduction to energy efficiency at an early age will produce further savings in the future.
