Green Butterfly Awards
The Green Butterfly Awards is an award scheme which recognises the enhancement of the natural environment as well as conservation of nature's resources.
During February 2003, award winners from all over Aberdeenshire were awarded Green Butterflies at the annual awards held by the Aberdeenshire Environmental Forum.
Glass Primary School, near Huntly, received their Butterfly Badges and a handsome wooden plaque for a whole range of wildlife-friendly and habitat enhancement projects that had been undertaken.
These include developing a wildlife area and a butterfly garden, the making and installing of bird and bat boxes, artwork for their playground and a nature trail dotted with information plaques and models of wild animals and birds.
Pupils of Tough Primary School, near Alford, were rewarded with the Butterfly Plaque for their ambitious fuel economy project.
They formed their own business unit, obtained sponsorship, developed concept designs, constructed a vehicle from recycled materials and entered it in the Shell Eco-Fuel Marathon this summer.
Other recipients included:
- Drum Tree Nursery, on Drum Castle estate, where a large variety of native trees and shrubs are grown from locally collected seed
- Portlethen Academy's 'Green Team' for their rearing of interesting plants and their recycling projects
- Maryculter Academy for organising an 'energy awareness campaign', including recycling mobile phones and printer cartridges, which has earned £270 for their school funds
