Schools Energy Savings
A total of nine schools in Aberdeenshire saved energy and also thousands of pounds during 2001-2002.
Eight primaries and one academy took part in an Energy Saving Trust SchoolEnergy capital rebate scheme which encourages schools to improve the efficiency of their school building services. See the Energy Savings 2001 - 2002 Results
The School Energy Programme was an Energy Saving Trust Initiative in association with Scottish Gas. School Energy was managed in Scotland by SCARF (Save Cash and Reduce Fuel), Aberdeen. Since the School Energy Programme was not included in the new Carbon Trust remit, once this was established in Scotland, Aberdeenshire Council took it upon themselves to continue the good work mentioned below.
As well as receiving rebates, the schools made large savings through a range of methods. These included increased insulation, installing thermostatic controls and time clocks.
Installing a cover on the swimming pool at Peterhead Academy led to savings of over £4000 a year as this prevented heat loss and saved energy used for heating.
Several schools have been saving over a £1000 on a yearly basis as a result of energy efficiency measures having been taken. Although all of them had to spend money to make these savings – most will show regular savings within a couple of years.
This is a rolling programme to target all schools and to encourage them to take energy conservation measures. Aberdeenshire Council has a significant amount to spend on energy saving in schools and a proportion of this is match-funded by organisations such as the Energy Saving Trust.
Building on the success of the SchoolEnergy programme, Scottish Gas has developed Think Energy to help schools teach pupils about the effect our use of energy has on the environment and to encourage a socially responsible attitude towards energy efficiency.
