Object Identification Service
Access to Collections
We receive numerous requests to view objects within the collections. A selection of objects from the collection departments (Art, Social History and Natural History etc) is always on display, either at our various museums, in our temporary exhibitions/displays or at our Education and Resource Centre at Mintlaw.

It is also possible to make appointments to view specific objects that are not on show. This may take some time to organise as objects can be away on loan, receiving conservation treatment or are not readily accessible for other reasons. Occasionally the condition and fragility of an item may prevent such access, or a re-storage programme may interfere with prompt access. However, we will try to arrange suitable access when possible.
Object Identification Service
We offer members of the public the opportunity to bring objects to the museum for assessment by our staff.
This usually includes the provision of information about the item such as maker, place of origin and advice on how to care for, display or store the object(s). This frequently involves more than one member of staff or department. When necessary, help is also given about where further information may be obtained, be it from other collection curators, specialists or organisations.

Valuations
Unfortunately, we are unable to authenticate or provide valuations for objects brought in for assessment. However, staff will be pleased to re-direct such matters to other sources such as auction houses and other organisations where valuations may be obtained.
Appointments
This is a popular service and, to help minimise the waiting time, staff see enquirers by appointment only. We would be grateful if you could either contact the relevant museum or the relevant member of staff in advance to make an appointment.
Contact
Though help may be possible by telephone, it is often necessary to ask that enquiries are put in writing. This also helps the museum to monitor the needs of the community, both local and elsewhere. To enquire about making an appointment with a member of staff or to ask for more information please don't hesitate to contact us on 01771 622807 or email museums@aberdeenshire.gov.uk
