News Release
Anne Frank exhibition comes to Portlethen
3rd June 2009
To celebrate the 80th anniversary of Anne Frank’s birth, Portlethen Library will be hosting a special exhibition in tribute to her legacy.
Anne Frank: A History for Today is a travelling exhibition managed by Anne Frank Scotland, which is part of The Anne Frank Trust UK, a partner charity of The Anne Frank House in Amsterdam.
The exhibition will be on display from Monday, June 8, until Wednesday, July 8. The tour coincides with the exact date of the 80th anniversary of Anne’s birth on Friday, June 12.
The exhibition enables visitors to gain a greater understanding of the human consequences of persecution and war by placing complex historical events against the life of one young person.
Anne Frank: A History for Today covers a wide range of issues and themes to raise awareness of a number of historical issues, such as:
- Anne Frank’s diary
- The history of the Frank family
- Anne Frank’s childhood
- The secret hiding place
- The rise of Nazism and the dismantling of democracy
- The courage of resisters and helpers
- The introduction of the Nazi racist state
- The victims of the Holocaust
- The deliberate and organised nature of genocide
- Human rights and moral choices
Anne Frank Scotland draws on the power of her life and her diary to challenge prejudice and reduce hatred, encouraging people to embrace positive attitudes, responsibility and respect for others.
This is done not only through the exhibition, but also through educational programmes for young people in schools and community centres.
A programme of activities for local schools and the wider community will be available for the duration of the exhibition.
The programme in Aberdeenshire will be Anne Frank Scotland’s focal event for the anniversary.
The work done by the charity this year will be marked in Parliament by a Members’ Debate on Thursday, June 11. This will also serve to highlight the anniversary, the Anne Frank Declaration and the continued relevance of both Anne’s story and Holocaust education.
