Portrait of a community
29th November 2012
A portfolio of images created by Turriff Academy pupils and inspired by German photographer August Sander (1876-1964) will go on public display in the town this week (Dec 1).
The exhibition of photographs, which are based on Sander’s work ‘People of the Twentieth Century’, has been created by third year art pupils as part of an project led by photographic artists Amy Davenport and Fergus Connor in several North Aberdeenshire schools.
The pupils researched Sander’s works - a selection of which was on display at Duff House, Banff earlier in the year – and the techniques he used to document their own communities in a similar manner.
The exhibition features self-portraits, as well as images of local people from Turriff and the surrounding community, and will be on display in Turriff Library until January 31, 2013 after which it will move to Woodhill House, Aberdeen.
The young people’s work is a response to the study of their environment –their town, school, family and friends – and their identity, in the 21st century.
The pupils were introduced to a range of equipment throughout the project, from pinhole to digital cameras, as well as learning the mechanics of darkroom processing.
Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning and Leisure, Councillor Isobel Davidson, said: “All the pupils involved in this project have put a great deal of work into it and I am sure they will be very proud to see the fruits of their labour on public display.”
Vice-chair of the committee, Councillor Ron McKail, added: “This has been a very positive project and I am sure all the pupils have learnt a great deal about photography and how it relates to identity over the course of the last few months.
“I very much welcome this display which will give the public the chance to see the great work that the pupils have produced.”
The project is being run by Aberdeenshire Council’s arts development team in collaboration with Historic Scotland who manages Duff House and the National Galleries of Scotland.
Both the August Sander exhibition and education programme are funded by Artists Rooms on tour with the Art Fund.
