Candidates gear up for Scottish Youth Parliament elections

4th March 2013

Young people across Aberdeenshire are being encouraged to vote in the up-coming Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) elections.

The Aberdeenshire elections will see candidates aged between 14 and 25 fight it out in four electoral constituencies- Banffshire and Buchan Coast, Aberdeenshire East, Aberdeenshire West and Angus North and Mearns - for a total of seven seats in the parliament.

Voting will take place online, from 9am on Friday, March 8, with polls remaining open until 4pm on Friday, March 15.

All young people aged between 12 – 25 years, who reside or are educated within Aberdeenshire can vote in the elections, which take place every two years.

The results will be announced at 7pm on Friday, March 15, at Woodhill House by Aberdeenshire Council’s Elections Co-ordinator Allan Bell.

He said: “This a great chance for young people in Aberdeenshire to make sure their voices are heard and elect candidates who will represent them at a national level.

“It’s fantastic to see so many young people standing in this year’s election, particularly in Aberdeenshire East, and I’m sure all the contests taking place will be closely fought. Indeed, I look forward to learning more about the individual campaigns.”

The vision for the Scottish Youth Parliament is of a stronger, more inclusive Scotland that empowers young people by truly involving them in the decision making process.  Elected members of the SYP represent different areas and voluntary organisations from across the whole of Scotland.

Links to the election site will be available from March 8 on Aberdeenshire GLOW, Young Scot (www.youngscot.org), and Aberdeenshire Council websites (www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk), as well as the Dialogue Aberdeenshire Facebook page.
