Burnhervie's Briggie

Burnhervie's Shakkin Briggie has been replaced at a cost of £70,000.

The graceful span across the River Don halfway between Inverurie and Kemnay is a key link in the local paths network.

The bridge has suffered from wind, weather and "owre muckle shakkin" since its adoption by Aberdeen County Council as long ago as 1914.

A recent Council survey concluded that the bridge's days were numbered unless a new crossing could be constructed between the existing towers.

Recent public consultation has demonstrated unanimous approval for the proposal, which has met with the willing co-operation of landowners Fetternear Estate.

The new structure is a more stable design than the old, with an emphasis on minimising maintenance and repair costs while remaining in keeping with its setting on an attractive stretch of the river.
