SPLD / Dyslexia

Aberdeenshire Education, Learning & Leisure Service policy development in the field of Dyslexia and Literacy Difficulty has been advised by examples of good practice in Aberdeenshire schools, research undertaken by the Educational Psychology Service along with national guidelines.  As part of this the Educational Psychology Service has developed assessment protocols in line with Aberdeenshire’s staged procedures, building upon good practice and the concept of the dyslexia friendly classroom. The National Coordinator for Dyslexia Scotland commented on our guidelines. These have now been distributed to all our schools. All primary schools in Aberdeenshire have received copies of the Scottish Executive’s "Count Me In : Responding to Dyslexia" information and staff development handbook.  This is specifically targeted at primary school staff and promotes the development of the "dyslexia friendly" classroom.

Professional development is offered through Aberdeenshire CPD courses which will be jointly delivered in Session 2006/07 by Aberdeenshire staff and the University of Aberdeen.  Courses aimed at the development of independent learning for children and young people with dyslexia through assistive technology are also available through the Authority’s CPD programme. The Post Graduate Diploma in Inclusive Practice, delivered by the University of Aberdeen, includes an introduction to Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) as one of its optional modules.

Aberdeenshire Education, Learning & Leisure Service is also participating in the Scottish Executive funded research project "Transition Dyslexia".  This has focused on primary/secondary transition processes and has involved schools in the Alford and Westhill Community School Networks.  This work will underpin the development of a national advice pack to schools.  This includes a CD Rom, which has been distributed to all schools. Aberdeenshire will incorporate this into its professional development programme in this field.
