Building Standards

The main purpose of Building Standards is to administer the Building (Scotland) Regulations in order to:

  • Secure the health, safety, welfare and convenience of persons in or about buildings;
  • Further the conservation of fuel and power;
  • Further the achievement of sustainable development.

The regulations apply to the erection, alteration, extension, demolition or conversion of a building or buildings.

The processing of Building Warrant applications is a major part of the work done by the Building Standards Service. Other work includes Houses in Multiple Occupation, Licensing, Defective and Dangerous Buildings.

The Building Standards Charter (pdf 370 KB) gives an introduction into the work carried out by the Building Standards Service. The main purpose of the Charter is to explain how the Service is organised, the Service standards and details of the complaints procedure.
