Business Rates Charges for 2008/09

Business Rates/Non Domestic Rates is a tax on business properties and other miscellaneous subjects (for example car parks, bus shelters etc).

The amount you pay is calculated by multiplying the Rateable Value of the property by the National Rates Poundage. (For example: rateable value of 5000, annual charge is 5000 x 0.458 = £2290.00)

The Valuation Roll is maintained by the Assessor at Grampian Valuation Joint Board. The rate poundage is set annually by the Scottish Government.

Rate Poundage Figures - 2008/09

  • Rateable Value £29,000 or less : 45.80p
  • Rateable Value £29,001 or more: 46.20p

All Non-Domestic properties are re-valued every 5 years. The last re-valuation was effective from 1st April 2005 and the next re-valuation will take effect from 1st April 2010.

Charges for Water and Wastewater

Charges for Water and Wastewater are set and collected by Scottish Water for non-domestic properties.

Transitional Arrangements

Following the 2005 Revaluation, customers may face significant increases in their Business Rates bills, above the Scottish average of 13.3%.

The aim of the transitional arrangement scheme is to protect ratepayers from the sudden increase in their bills following revaluation, by phasing in the true value of their Business Rates charge over a number of years.

The scheme aims to combine simplicity with the initial protection for those faced with significant real increases in bills. In most cases it limits increases in bills to 12.5% in real terms and the decrease to 10%.

Should you require a Non Domestic Rates Revaluation 2007/08 Transitional Arrangements Leaflet explaining the scheme in detail please see the down loadable leaflet.
