Active Schools Aberdeenshire Partnership Programmes
Many national agencies recognise the importance of Active Schools in coordinating and facilitating governing bodies and Scottish Government initiatives that impact on our young people’s lives and habits.
Aberdeenshire Active schools has worked in partnership with the SFA, AFC, Food Standards Agency, NHS, Big Lottery, Youth Sports Trust and Disability Sport amongst others to deliver the objectives of each individual programme to a high standard.
Active Schools work closely with Aberdeenshire Councils team of Focus Sports Specific and Active Lifestyle officers. They also have an army of coaches, leaders and instructors in a wide variety of sports. For more information on Focus Sports programmes go to the Sports Development page or contact Fraser Govan on 01569 768355.
Some exciting initiatives that are being launched through Active schools in 2008-09 are:
Active from the Start
Active Schools working in partnership with NHS Grampian, Early Years and the Intervention team at Aberdeenshire Council have developed this project aimed at nursery children and involving parents supporting the development of these key skills. The project commences with curricular delivery and then children have ‘take home activity bags’ to encourage participation of physical activity at home with parents to develop core competencies e.g. rolling, catching, kicking etc. Activity cards give parents specific ideas on how to develop each skill at home.
Fit For Girls
Fit for Girls, a national drive that will be led by sportscotland and backed by Government investment, is aimed at schoolgirls aged 11-16 with the intention of encouraging them to adopt more active lifestyles. The programme will involve five Youth Sport Trust (YST) trainers providing training for teachers and Active Schools Coordinators, so that specially tailored activities can be developed for girls both in school and outside the curriculum. Successful pilot schemes, supported by funding from the Big Lottery Fund and YST expertise, have already been run in 27 schools, with research showing that average participation rates increased from 18 per cent to 26 per cent in three quarters of the schools involved.
Click on the link below to find out more about the pilot programme which ran in the Meldrum network.
firstclubgolf
clubgolf is designed as a safe and exciting introduction to the game of golf. It is played with multi-coloured modified clubs, rubberised balls and Velcro targets. This is an exciting national programme, which offers primary 5 pupils an excellent pathway from curricular delivery to being adopted by a local golf club where a youth section is set up to further develop the child’s potential until the age of 16. Schools receive a free resource bag and lesson plans in order to deliver the programme.
Go-Ride
Go-Ride is a cycling programme for young people run by the governing body of the sport, British Cycling.

Soccer One
Funding from Bank of Scotland allows the Scottish FA, via Football Development Officers and in partnership with local authorities, to deliver training sessions throughout the school year to boys and girls, not currently participating in football. In addition, a key part of the programme is to allow young people, not currently involved or selected for the existing school team to participate in regular matches against other schools.
For further information please contact Graeme Sutherland SFA Regional Manager (North) Graeme.Sutherland@scottishfa.co.uk or Brian Mitchell, Active Schools Manager, 01569 768349.
Young Leader Award
The Young Leader Award is a national programme of leadership training for young people between the ages of 9 and 13 that promotes them working with younger children, teaching leadership skills through a range of games and activities. The programme is used to promote sport & physical activity and increase levels of active play within the playground. A 6-week after school leadership training course is offered to participating schools and is lead by the Active Schools Coordinator (ASC).
