Lessons Overview

Under 5's Classes

Adult and Child

These classes take place with the adult and child in the water. These classes are taught with up to 12 children and adults: 1 teacher.
There are four age groups for these classes:

  • 3 to 15 months
  • 15 months to 2 1/2 years
  • 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 years
  • 3 1/2 years to 5 years

Preschool

These classes take place with the child in the water without the parent. These classes are taught with up to 6 children: 1 teacher.
There are two types of classes:

  • Preschool – 3 1/2 years to 5 years
  • Advanced preschool – 3 1/2 years to 5 years

The advanced preschool classes are for the more confident children and entry to these classes will be by invitation only.top of page

Over 5's Classes

These classes take place with the child in the water without the adult. They are for children of 5 yrs and over (or attending Primary 1).

We aim to keep the child to teacher ratios lower in Level 1 & 2, this is to promote an improved learning environment and for safety.

Children must be able to perform the skills mentioned before attending the class.

Please note this is a brief overview of the skills required and not an exhaustive list.

There are six levels:

Level 1
Introduction to basic movement skills, water confidence and orientation in shallow water.

  • Non swimmer
  • Unable to perform skills mentioned under Level 2

Level 2
Improving submersion, buoyancy, balance, and body position. Travel for up to 10 metres on front and back.

  • Using a float/aid, float on back unassisted.
  • Pick up objects from the pool floor in shallow water

Level 3
Introduction to the swimming strokes. Developing buoyancy, sculling, rotation and breath control. Confidence in deep water.

  • Demonstrate a floating position on front and back for 10 seconds
  • Swim through a submerged hoop

Level 4
Improving swimming skills, including reinforcing body position, breathing and timing.

  • Demonstrate a good push off wall & kick in a streamlined position for 15m.
  • Swim 15m Frontcrawl breathing to the side.

Level 5
Developing quality swimming strokes for up to 50 metres and an introduction to survival skills.

  • Surface dive and retrieve an object from the pool floor in deep water.
  • Demonstrate Butterfly arms & legs together for 5m.

Level 6
Combining swimming strokes and movement to develop swimming specific skills for up to 100m.

Developing survival skills

When swimmers complete this level they can continue their swimming education with the
local swimming club.

  • Swim 50m Frontcrawl with good technique, including a turn.
  • Swim 50m Backcrawl with good technique, including a turn.top of page

Adults

These classes are for 16 years and over.

  • Beginners
  • Improvers
  • Developers

Lifesaving

  • Rookie classes
  • Bronze medallion
  • NPLQ

General Information

Movement through the Levels from 1 to 6 will be made through teacher assessment. This is continual throughout the term and parents will receive feedback regarding this three times a year. If you wish to discuss your child’s progress during the term please speak to the instructor outwith class times.
