Methlick Bridge

We have over 1800 bridges in Aberdeenshire, some of them built by Britain’s most eminent civil engineers.  Some are large but most are small; some are steel, concrete or timber but most are masonry arches. They are part of our built heritage.  We try to ensure that they are fit for purpose, their purpose being to transport people and vehicles over obstructions, mostly rivers.

Invercauld Bridge

There are 1775 bridges and drainage structures on our road network.

All bridge types deteriorate over time and require regular maintenance.

We carry out routine inspections on a two yearly cycle and special inspections when necessary. Defects are noted and recorded, their causes determined and appropriate repair specifications prepared. Maintenance works are then prioritised.

Jumping off bridges

Don't do it! - Its Dangerous & can lead to serious injury!

Some people like jumping off bridges.  They do it for fun.  It takes a certain amount of courage and bravado and a lot of luck.  If you jump off a bridge that’s 60ft above the river, you’ll hit the water at roughly 60 feet per second.  Think about that.  That’s 40 miles an hour.  If you think metric, that’s 65kph.

Please don’t jump off any of our bridges, or anyone else’s.  That’s not what they’re for.

Recently, a young lady was seriously hurt jumping off one of our bridges.  She suffered a compressed spinal injury from the impact with the water, not with the rocks.  She needed surgery and fortunately, she’s recovering well.  It took over 45 minutes for the emergency services to work out how to get her safely up from the river and into the ambulance and for all that time, she was in agony.  She couldn’t bear the weight of a towel on her back to keep her warm.  She was lucky.  She could have been paralysed.  There have been fatalities.

Unless you’re supremely confident of making a perfect entry into the water, then the chances are that you could get hurt by the impact.  Please think about it.  Please don’t jump.  Some people get away with it; some people get injured; some die.
