Car crime is an ongoing problem and the police are taking more and more steps to try and reduce the number of cases, if you follow a few of the procedures mentioned below, you may prevent car crime from happening to you.
Every year in the UK more than a million car crime offences occur, to protect yourself and your car you can:
- Don’t leave valuables visible: never leave anything on display when you park your car, even a coat or a plastic bag could tempt a thief
- Look after your car keys: never leave your keys in your car when you get out, even if it’s only for a few minutes, most thieves are opportunistic
- Be careful where you park: try to park in a well lit and open area or in an attended car park to give yourself that extra piece of mind, when returning to your car always have your car keys ready to use
- If you have a detachable stereo: then remove it, this will deter thieves from trying to break into your car if there is nothing of value to steal
- Lock all doors and close windows: especially when in slow traffic as it only takes an opportunistic thief a few seconds to grab what you have left on the seat
- Personal details: don’t leave any cash, bank cards or papers in your car especially private mail with your address on it and documents like vehicle registration as these make it easy for any thief to sell your car
