Western Peripheral Route
The Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route is a key component in the proposals for the development of the Modern Transport System in the North East of Scotland.
It will bring a range of benefits, both directly and through assisting in achieving other elements of the System.
- It will remove through traffic from the city
- It will relieve heavy traffic from unsuitable rural routes
- It will provide better access to and from the North of the area for business and commerce
- It will act as a distributor around the city linking park and ride sites
- It will provide the opportunity to reallocate road space to public transport, cyclists and pedestrian priorities
It is of strategic importance, not only for the immediate area, but also Scotland as a whole, the project will help tackle congestion, increase accessibility, sustain and enable devleopment, and improve the quality of life.
Work Carried out from 2001 to 2004
Over the period 2001 to 2004 a significant amount of detailed analysis and assessment work was carried out, in particular to look at the options for the section between the A96 and the A90 to the North of Aberdeen.

Information on the development of the route options were taken to consultation in March 2005 and are held on the AWPR website.
Current Situation
On 1 December 2005 the Minister for Transport announced that the AWPR would be taken forward on the Milltimber Brae Route but with an added link south to Stonehaven.
The preferred line narrows down the original planning corridor of the route. The line identifies areas the road will and will not affect, and confirms that only 19 houses will have to be removed in order to build the 46 kilometres long bypass. The next stage will be to develop this line further in order to allow the draft orders to be published at the end of the year.

At it's meeting on 29 June 2006, Aberdeenshire Council considered a report by the Chief Executive on the funding agreement between Aberdeenshire Council, Aberdeen City Council and the Scottish Executive.
Councillors unanimously agreed to a commitment to contribute 9.5% of the costs of delivering the AWPR via a Public Private Partnership arrangement, at an estimated cost of £2 million per annum. Further clarification is to be sought from the Scottish Executive of the exact calculation that has led to the £2million figure.
Members also welcomed the Executive’s commitment to funding the Stonehaven fast-link in its entirety, and approved an increased contribution of £338,000 towards the estimated costs of delivering the AWPR in the current financial year.
Full details of the scheme are held on the AWPR website.
