Forklift Truck Operation
Before using the forklift truck the following rules must be followed:
- No person must use the fork lift truck at any time unless trained to do so and named as a trained person by this company (refer to training records)
- The work environment has been adapted to provide separate areas for pedestrians and forklift trucks. The routes must be adhered to at all times
- No members of the public are to be allowed into areas where forklift trucks are in operation.
Before using the forklift truck each day carry out the following checks:
- Tyre pressures are correct and that the tyres are not damaged
- Parking and service brakes operate effectively
- Audible warning signals are working
- Lights are working
- Battery is adequately charged
- Systems for lifting, tilting and manipulation are working properly
Never:
- Lift loads that exceed the truck's rated capacity
- Travel forwards with a bulky load obscuring your vision
- Travel on soft ground
- Carry passengers
- Block fire fighting equipment or exits by parking or stacking in front of them
- Attempt to carry out forklift truck repairs or maintenance (refer to the engineer)
- Allow people to walk under a raised mast or load
- Travel with a raised load
- Attempt to turn on an incline or usUse attachments unless:
- 1. you have been appropriately trained in their use and
- 2. they are used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Always:
- Observe floor loading limits - find out the weight of a laden truck
- Watch out for obstructions
- Ensure the load is not wider that the width of the gangway
When driving on inclines ensure that:
- 1. when carrying the load it faces up hill
- 2. when no load is carried the fork arms face downhill
- 3. the tilt is adjusted to suit the gradient and the forks are raised for ground clearance - Avoid sudden stops
- Slow down for corners and sound the horn when appropriate
- Travel with fork arms lowered while maintaining ground clearance
- Ensure that bridge plates are secure and strong to withstand the weight of the truck and load
- Carry out the pre-lift check
- Lower loads as soon as they are clear of racking
- Lower heavy loads slowly
- Leave the truck with the arms fully lowered
- Switch off the engine and remove the key when leaving the truck
