Qualifying Awards

Basic Expedition Leader Award [B.E.L.A.]

This national award is aimed at youth leaders and teachers. It prepares the holder to train young people in the basic skills involved in journeying on foot in low level countryside in the UK during the summer months (generally from May-October inclusive).

Mountain Leader Training UK

Mountain Leader Training Scotland (MLTS) is the training board responsible for the provision of National Governing Body Awards in mountaincraft, which are valid throughout the UK and supersede in-house or local training provided by the council.

Walking Group Leader Award

This award allows leader to operate in open, non mountainous or remote country such as moorland, and in areas enclosed by well defined geographical or man made boundaries such as classified roads. It also provides training in the skills necessary to remotely supervise groups safely.

Mountain Leader (Summer) Award
Holders of this award are competent to lead parties on High Hills in summer conditions throughout the UK on routes where the use of a rope would not normally be anticipated. This award is also appropriate for those leading parties on expeditions in remote country.

Mountain Leader (Winter) Award
Holders of this award are competent to lead parties on high hills in winter conditions throughout the UK on routes where the use of a rope would not normally be anticipated.

International Mountain Leader Award
Holders of this award are competent to lead trekking parties on non-technical and non-glaciated terrain throughout the world.

Establishments planning walking trips outside the UK must seek further advice from the Adventurous Activities Consultant.

Mountain Instructor Scheme
Holders of awards from this scheme are competent to lead parties on mountain expeditions of all types throughout the UK, and are trained in the teaching and instructing of all aspects of mountaineering.

i) Mountain Instructor Award
Holders of the MIA have completed the summer components of the scheme and are thus competent in all respects in summer conditions.

Association of British Mountain Guides
Full members of the Association of British Mountain Guides (and holders of UIAGM Carnet) are internationally recognised as competent to lead mountaineering parties on all mountain terrain throughout the world.
