Qualifying Awards for Alpine Skiing

There are two main organisations in snow sports: Snowsport Scotland which is the National Governing Body and the British Association of Snowsport Instructors (BASI) which is a training organisation for professional instructors.

Artificial Snow Sport Leader
This is the instructional qualification for people wishing to teach on artificial slopes.

Alpine Ski Leader
This award is primarily aimed at teachers, youth group leaders and other responsible adults wishing to safely lead groups on posted ski patrolled areas. The training includes instruction of introductory levels of Alpine skiing techniques.

British Association of Snowsports Instructors (BASI)

BASI organise and manage a national scheme of professional instructor qualifications in Alpine skiing, some of which may be of relevance and interest. For full details contact the BASI website.

Qualifying Awards for Nordic Skiing

Nordic Ski-Leader

The Nordic Ski Leader is trained to a standard of skiing, ski instruction and leadership which allows the holder to lead small groups on day journeys in forests, low lying countryside (below 600 m) and in recognised ski areas where a ski patrol operates, It includes the use of ski lifts.

British Association of Snowsports Instructors

BASI organise and manage a national scheme of professional instructor qualifications in Nordic and Telemark skiing, some of which may be of relevance and interest to Aberdeenshire staff

 

Adaptive Skiing

Adaptive skiing involves working with skiers with disabilities. Training and assessment is given in six disciplines as follows:

  • Bi-Ski
  • Mono-Ski
  • 3-Track
  • 4-Track
  • Learning Disability
  • Sensory Impairment

 

BASI offer a range of qualifications for those wishing to work with skiers who have disabilities

Ski Mountaineering

Mountain Ski Leader
This qualification enables holders of nationally recognised Nordic and Alpine qualifications who also hold the Winter Mountain Leader Award to lead groups on touring equipment off-piste/off-track in mountain areas within the U.K.

 

British Association for Mountain Guides

Full members of the above Association (or equivalent International Carnet holders), are qualified to lead parties on all mountain terrain

.Note: Any staff planning to lead groups of young people (under 18) on skis in a High Hills environment must contact the Adventure Activities Consultant at an early stage in the planning process.
