What is dementia?
Dementia is the progressive loss of the powers of the brain. As a person's memory and mental functions decline, they may lose the ability to perform quite simple, every day tasks. They may not recognise where they are, what day of the week it is, or who people are. They may be more aware of the past than the present. Personality changes may also occur.

There are different kinds of dementia. The most common types are:
- Alzheimer’s disease
- vascular dementia
In recent years there have been developments which have helped people to manage life with dementia. We work in partnership with other agencies and the health service to provide a range of services to help individuals and their families affected by dementia.

Talk to us about your needs
People with dementia and their carers, can access our community care services as well as specialist services. If you think you, or a person close to you, may need support because of dementia, ask for an assessment of needs.
A care manager assigned to your care will discuss your needs with you and your family. The care manager will agree a care plan and make arrangements for the help you need to care for yourself.
A typical plan may include:
- practical support in the home
- financial support
- health support to help you manage your illness
- access to social activities
- long term care options

If you, or a relative or friend, has dementia and needs help, call 03456 08 12 06 or your GP.
If you are in hospital or attending a clinic, you can ask to speak to social work staff based there.
Will I have to pay for services provided?
There are charges for some services. The amount you will be expected to pay depends on your income. Your care manager will explain this to you before you agree to a particular service.
There is no charge for the assessment of your needs or welfare benefit checks.
