Aberdeenshire Council is keen to promote Travel Plans and welcomes enquiries from employers in Aberdeenshire interested in developing their own Travel Plan or promoting sustainable transport. We hope the below information can help as a guide to promoting your travel plan.

Travel Plan Initiatives:

Walk Week: Our staff travel survey revealed many staff who live Walk Weekclose to work travel by car. A Week of walking promotional activities was organised for 12-18 May 2008 to encourage more walking. These included a free pedometer challenge and also free lunchtime Nordic walking sessions. It was a great success with 186 people taking part.

Public Transport Discounts:Aberdeenshire Council staff can claim a 5% discount when purchasing First Aberdeen weekly, monthly and 3 monthly tickets from their King Street HQ or Union Street shop. Just show your ID badge.

Cycling Infrastructure: The Council’s Travel Plan identifies the need for improving facilities for cyclists at all major centres of employment. There are 27 cycle lockers, 5 showers and 20 belonging lockers at Woodhill House and shower and changing facilities have also been installed at council offices in Stonehaven and Inverurie. Lockers have been installed at Ellon Park and Ride with additional lockers installed due to high demand.

Cycling Discounts for staff: Alpine Bikes (01224 211455), Ellon Cycles (01358 723 724), Ruftrack Bikes in Stonehaven (01569 767974) and Changing Gears in Inverurie 01467 670111 - 5% on bikes and 10% on accessories. Excludes sale prices and any future savings made from salary sacrifice schemes. Some dealers do not include childrens bikes in this promotion. Please check with dealer. These businesses can help you choose the right size of bike and offer valuable follow up support. Just show you ID badge when purchasing. All employers can negotiate similar discounts.

FREE Car Share Scheme: The Travel Plan established a car share scheme www.carshareaberdeenshire.com launched in March 2004 consisting of a public scheme and private scheme for Council employees. The scheme is promoted through induction, payroll, staff e-mail and intranet and employee newsletters and annually on the 14 June for ‘National Liftshare Day’. You can promote this FREE scheme to your employees, colleagues, friends and family.

For Liftshare Day 2007 actors from a theatre group iain gabrielwere brought in to highlight car sharing to staff. Iain Gabriel, Director of Transportation and Infrastructure is pictured opposite with the actors.

Travel Information: Staff are encouraged to use Traveline Scotland to access information on public transport timetables. You can also phone on 0871 200 22 33.

Video/Audio Conferencing: As part of the Council's aim to reduce business mileage by 4% staff can access video conferencing equipment at a number of locations. For more information please call 01224 664773. VC Taster Sessions were organised in March 2008 with trainers at each of the Council's VC sites. Audio conferencing has also been promoted. Other news: Aberdeenshire Council is currently investigating possible salary sacrifice schemes for the purchase of discounted bicycles and interest free loans to employees for season bus and rail tickets.

Aberdeenshire Council takes every opportunity to promote the Travel Plan to businesses as an example of best practice and welcomes any enquiries from businesses or individuals.

All of the above is promoted to staff via the internal intranet, via posters and leaflets. Maintaining a high profile publicity campaign is essential to the success of a travel plan.
