The Benefits of Cycling

"It's a great way of getting out with the kids and importantly, getting them away from the TV and getting some exercise." John Masterton

Health Benefits:

  • Cycling reduces the risk of serious conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and the most common form of diabetes.  Regular cyclists enjoy a fitness level equal to that of a person ten years younger.  (Source:  National Forum for Coronary Heart Disease Foundation, Sharp).
  • Three quarters of all personal journeys are less than 5 miles long – that’s half an hour on a bike.  Cycling can help you 2 cyclists on mountain bikesmaintain a healthy weight.
  • Feel better.  Being in a car exposes you to around 25% more pollution than if you are walking or cycling. This can cause or worsen headaches, eye pain, asthma and respiratory complaints. Every time you exercise, especially outdoors, you boost your immune system, helping you to fight off illness.  While cycling, it is often easy to find pleasant, traffic-free routes meaning that your journeys can become a pleasant addition to your day. Apart from the physical benefits, cycling has also been proven to assist in preventing and overcoming depression.  (Source:  Cycling Scotland)
  • Give your brain a boost- Regular physical activity helps more than just your body. People starting their day with a ride to work or school become more alert, confident and better able to process information and handle tasks. By using your bike on a regular basis, you will also be able to deal with stress or anxiety and boost your self confidence.  (Source:  Cycling Scotland)

Financial Benefits:

  • Cycling is far cheaper than using the car, bus or train.   By a view of a bicycle from abovecommuting on bike you might also save money on gym membership.
  • While it may not be practical for every journey, the local journeys most suited to cycling are also the worst for your car, your bank balance and the environment.
  • Cycling avoids parking charges.

Environmental Benefits:

  • You can make a direct contribution to the local and global environment by changing your travel habits. By switching your car journeys to cycling, even partially, you are reducing the CO2 emissions that are so harmful to our atmosphere.  You are also helping to reduce noise pollution, traffic congestion, and the need for new traffic lanes and roads.
