Local Transport Strategy
The LTS 2012
In January 2012, Aberdeenshire Council adopted its new Local Transport Strategy (LTS) outlining the key transport issues affecting Aberdeenshire and setting out a series of actions which will support delivery of a transport vision for the area.
The LTS recognises the role that the car has to play in a rural setting such as Aberdeenshire. However, in the current economic climate, the overarching philosophy of the LTS has been developed to maximise existing resources. Central to its approach is the guiding principle to encourage individuals and business to consider ways to travel less, travel more actively and, where vehicular travel is necessary, how journeys could be undertaken more effectively.
The development of the LTS was adopted using a high engagement, low carbon approach. In practice this meant limiting meetings, utilising online consultation tools and providing electronic documentation. In seeking to put policy into practice the Council wishes to be seen as an example to others.
During consultation, feedback was received from over 1000 residents and stakeholder groups, ensuring the LTS approach and actions are supported by the citizens of the region.
Addressing the issues of congestion, climate change, physical inactivity and the prospect of future fuel scarcity, the new LTS is clear in its objectives to deliver real, measureable improvements. More than ever, Aberdeenshire Council is committed to building on our past successes and addressing these challenges.
