Coronavirus business support grants

Grant funding to support business to deal with the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak has been provided by the Scottish Government and is being administered by Aberdeenshire Council.

These grants are aimed at helping keep small and medium sized companies in businesses and maintain productive capacity so that they can recover. Their intention is to protect jobs, prevent business closure, promote economic recovery:

Business support fund

Small business support grant (£10,000)

Available for those ratepayers of properties which had a rateable value of £18,000 or less and were on 17th March 2020 either:

  • In receipt of Small Business Bonus Scheme relief (SBBS)
  • In receipt of Rural Relief
  • Eligible for SBBS but in receipt of either Nursery Relief, Disabled Relief, Fresh Start Relief or Business Growth Accelerator

Retail, hospitality and leisure sport grant (£25,000)

Available for those ratepayers of properties in these business sectors with a rateable value between £18,001 and £51,000.

This is the rateable value as at 17th March 2020 regardless of any later change in rateable value due to an appeal and available only where the ratepayer occupied the premises for that business use on 17th March 2020.

Extension to grant schemes

From 5th May 2020, eligibility to the small business support grant scheme has been extended to include:

  • Ratepayers with multiple properties (only in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors) with individual rateable values under £18,000 but whose cumulative rateable value is between £35,000 and £51,000
  • Small sports clubs that are eligible for SBBS but are in receipt of discretionary sports relief
  • Charities that are eligible for SBBS but in receipt of charitable rates relief
  • Small properties in enterprise areas that are eligible for SBBS but are in receipt of enterprise area relief

Ratepayers with multiple business properties which meet the relevant criteria for the Small Business Support Grant are eligible for a £10,000 grant for one property and may be eligible for additional grant(s) of £7,500 for each subsequent qualifying property. 

Ratepayers with multiple business properties which meet the relevant criteria for the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant are eligible for a £25,000 grant for one property and may be eligible for additional grant(s) of £18,750 for each subsequent qualifying property.

From June 8th the business support grant schemes have been extended further, extending the eligibility of the current small business and retail, hospitality and leisure grants to businesses that
occupy multiple premises with a cumulative rateable value up to £500,000 (Previously restricted to£51,000). Also, to businesses occupying premises, but where they are not the ratepayer. This grant is called the tenant/occupier grant.

How to apply

The closing date for all types of business grant applications is 10th July 2020.

To apply for a business support grant complete either or the grants, please complete the business support application form (pdf 307KB) and email it to business.grants@aberdeenshire.gov.uk.

A separate application is required for each property you are claiming for and appropriate bank account information must also be provided with each application.

Business support fund for tenants and occupiers

The grant is available to those businesses who occupy shared office spaces, business incubators, shared industrial units and the like and where the landlord is the ratepayer. You must meet qualifying criteria if you wish to apply:

  • you must lease space from a landlord who is the registered ratepayer for the property
  • have a signed lease, which was in force prior to 17th March 2020
  • be a registered business or partnership
  • employ at least one person
  • have a business bank account

To apply for a business support grant complete either or the grants, please complete the tenant/occupier grants application form (pdf 267KB) and email it to business.grants@aberdeenshire.gov.uk.

A separate application is required for each property you are claiming for and appropriate bank account information must also be provided with each application.

Bed and Breakfast fund

The purpose of this fund is to provide hardship relief grants of £3,000 to bed and breakfasts and small serviced accommodation providers who have not been able to access support.

The scheme is aimed at ‘Small Serviced Accommodation’, which includes bed and breakfasts and other establishments offering bed and breakfast services for example guest houses, farmhouses, inns, and restaurants with rooms:

  • this fund excludes other types of non-serviced accommodation providers such as self-catering and caravan accommodation
  • successful applicants will receive a one-off payment of £3,000
  • individuals must apply in the Local Authority area where the business is located
