Council's daily business

On any given day, the council’s core business involves:

  • Educating around 35,495 children and young people in 87 nurseries, 152 primaries, 4 special schools, 17 academies
  • Operating 45 community centres, 4 sports centres, 36 libraries, 15 swimming pools
  • Being a social landlord, renting and maintaining 12,966 council homes
  • Looking after and maintaining 5,520 km of road and 44,696 street lights
  • Collecting bins from 117,121 properties
  • Managing and maintaining 113 car parks, 1,270 bridges and 7 harbours
  • Providing care at home services, and occupational therapy
  • Providing support and care to vulnerable adults and children and helping older people retain their independence through the running of 10 family resource centres, 3 children’s homes, 8 older people care homes, 33 day centres and 1,518 sheltered houses
  • Registering births, deaths, partnerships and marriages
  • Respond to 886 calls through our contact centre and receive 156 job applications
  • Helping start-up businesses
  • Supporting 120 supported local bus services

We have a responsibility to provide hundreds of services to the residents and communities of Aberdeenshire. We will deliver these as efficiently as we can, with a business-like approach and customers at the heart of everything we do. In doing so we will continually review how we operate and the level of service that is required to meet demand. Inevitably there will be changes, and our commitment is that you will be fully informed and your voice will be heard.
