Wider sustainability in the council

As we work to adapt to climate change, we try to make all parts of the council more sustainable. This page details wider ways we are becoming more environmentally friendly by cutting emissions and using resources carefully.

Housing

Heating homes and buildings is a large source of carbon emissions in Aberdeenshire. The Local Heat and Energy Efficiency Strategy (LHEES) sets out how we will improve energy efficiency and move towards low-carbon heating.

It identifies where upgrades and new technologies can make the most impact, helping create warm, efficient, and affordable homes and workplaces while supporting Scotland’s net zero goals.

Resources and circular economy commitment

The Resources and Circular Economy Commitment (PDF 110KB) has been developed to give us direction for how we buy, use, and manage physical resources in a more sustainable way. It supports the move towards a circular economy, where we reduce waste, reuse materials, and make the most of what we already have.

Transportation

We deliver a range of strategies and projects to support relating to cleaner, safer, and more sustainable transportation. We are also part of the:

Biodiversity and natural heritage

Protecting and improving Aberdeenshire’s natural environment is essential to tackling climate change and supporting healthy communities.

We deliver a range of strategies, projects, and support focused on biodiversity and natural heritage.

You can learn about greenspace project, which promotes community involvement in creating and caring for local greenspaces.

Procurement

Sustainable procurement helps ensure that the goods and services we buy deliver value for money while supporting our climate goals.

To help suppliers consider sustainability and climate change in their bids for council contracts, we’ve developed example procurement questions (PDF 118KB).
