Westhill - novice and sprint Triathlon description

Swim section

Westhill Pool is a 25m, 6 lane pool allowing heats of 30 swimmers. Short distance is 16 lengths and the Sprint distance is 30 lengths. The start is at the deep end of the pool as the exit is at that end of the building up a flight of stairs. At the top of the stairs there is adequate room for competitors to leave shoes and clothing.

Transition area

The transition area is set up in the car park at the swimming pool. This means that there is about a 30m grass run to reach your bike.

There will be a coned off area for you to run down. The run to the transition area is on grass and tarmac and will be thoroughly swept if athletes wish to run this section barefoot. If you choose to put your footwear on before running down the hill you may leave your footwear in a designated area.

The mount and dismount line will be at the bottom of the hill.

Cycle section

The sprint cycle course consists of one red lap then one blue lap and the short cycle course is one red lap only. View the cycle route map (pdf 184KB) and follow the directions:

Run with your bike from the transition area to the mount and dismount line, go up hill to meet Hays Way. Turn right on to Hays Way and follow the road until you come to a T junction then turn left onto Westhill Drive. Keep going up the hill heading up towards the golf course, which is on your left-hand side. Continue along this road (taking care on the bends) to the crossroads on the B979. At this junction turn left and continue along the B979 for about 1km. Turn right towards Auchronie, keep going along this road for around 3km until you reach a small junction at this point you need to turn left and head uphill following this road until you reach a T junction. At this junction you need to turn left onto the B9126 Aberdeen road. Continue along this road until you come to a school, at the school turn left heading towards Kirkton of Skene, at Kirkton of Skene turn left and cycle through. Follow this road all the way back to Westhill and at Hays Way turn left.

If you are doing the short cycle, continue along Hays Way and then turn right at the swimming pool into the transition area observing the traffic flow on the hill.

If you are doing the sprint cycle, continue along Hays Way until you reach Westhill Drive for a second time, turn left and head up the hill passing the Golf Course for a second time, continue as for the first lap. Upon reaching the T junction where you turn right for the first lap continue past this for about 100m, at this point you need to turn left and head downhill towards Old Skene Road. On meeting Old Skene Road turn left and head towards Westhill, proceed as before turning left into Hays Way and left again into the transition area observing the traffic flow on the hill.

Run section 

The sprint run course consists of one red lap then one blue lap and the short cycle course is one red lap only. All runners follow the green route to the finish. View the run route map (pdf 227KB) and follow the directions:

After racking your bike, exit transition area, run up the hill and turn left along the pavement on Hays Way. Follow Hays Way until you join Old Skene Road. Turn left and run, taking care at all side road junctions until you reach the marshal on this road where you will turn left and run up the footpath past the school and left onto Hays Way.

If you are doing the sprint run, continue for a second lap of this route.

If you are doing the short run, or after you have completed your second lap of the sprint run, continue until you reach the swimming pool then turn right into the swimming pool to finish by the transition area.
