Swim Aberdeenshire training

We offer training courses and Continual Professional Development (CPD) workshops for swimming teachers and coaches.

Courses and pre-requisites

UKCC level 1 and 2 courses for teachers and coaches are available. Proof of the pre-requisites will be required when booking a space on any of these courses.

Level 1 teaching aquatics (UKCC L1)

The level 1 certificate for teaching aquatics is an all inclusive qualification that sits as the first formally assessed qualification on the teaching qualifications pathway.

Once qualified, you are able to actively support a more senior qualified or licensed aquatic teacher at any level, in the delivery of a pre-prepared session. You will be expected to have an understanding of the aquatic and a basic understanding of appropriate correction to common aquatic faults.

To take this course, you must be at least 16 years of age at the commencement of the course.

Level 2 teaching aquatics (UKCC L2)

The level 2 certificate for teaching aquatics is an all inclusive qualification and sits as the second formally assessed qualification on the teaching qualifications pathway.

Once qualified, you are able to plan, deliver and evaluate a series of six consecutive sessions within the context of a scheme of work also prepared by you.

To take this course, you must be:

  • at least 17 years of age at the commencement of the course
  • a current member of Scottish Swimming
  • a holder of the Scottish Swimming UKCC level 1 certificate for teaching aquatics, ASA/UKCC level 1 certificate for teaching aquatics, ASA level 1 certificate for teaching Swimming post 2002, ASA Assistant teacher certificate (swimming) post 1994

Alternatively, you must have gained exemption prior to enrolment on the learning programme from Scottish Swimming.

Level 1 coaching swimming (UKCC L1)

The level 1 certificate for coaching swimming sits as the first formally assessed qualification on the coaching qualifications pathway.

To actively support a more senior qualified or licensed swimming coach, at any level, in the delivery of a pre-prepared coached session, you will be expected to have an understanding of speed swimming techniques, a basic understanding of appropriate corrections to common faults
and be able to deliver a series of effective training sets.

To take this course, you must be at least 16 years of age at the commencement of the course.

Level 2 coaching swimming (UKCC L2)

The level 2 certificate for coaching swimming sits as the second formally assessed qualification on the coaching qualifications pathway.
Once qualified, you are able to plan, deliver and evaluate a series of six consecutive sessions within the context of a macro cycle prepared by a senior or licensed coach.

To take this course, you must be:

  • at least 17 years of age at the commencement of the course
  • a current member of Scottish Swimming
  • a holder of the Scottish Swimming UKCC level 1 certificate for coaching swimming, ASA UKCC level 1 certificate for coaching swimming

Alternatively, you must have gained exemption prior to the course from Scottish Swimming.

Early years course

This qualification is for those wishing to deliver to children aged 0 to 5 years of age, including adult and child and preschool lessons. 

  • at least 17 years of age at the commencement of the course
  • a current member of Scottish Swimming
  • a holder of the Scottish Swimming UKCC level 2 certificate for teaching aquatics or equivalent

Scottish Swimming membership

To register on one of our courses, you must have a Scottish Swimming membership. 

To get a Scottish Swimming membership, you can apply via the online form

If you do not already have an account, you will need to set one up. If you are applying for membership as an Aberdeenshire Council employee the swim school name is "Swim Aberdeenshire". 

Membership years runs from 1 March to the end of February. If the course is due to take place after the 1 March then do not apply for membership before this date.

Booking a course

To book a course, download and complete the booking form (pdf 40KB) and post it to the address found on the form.

With the form you will need to provide:

Candidates must book onto these courses a minimum of two (level 1) or four weeks (level 2 and early years) in advance of the first session. Spaces cannot be allocated within this final two or four week period.

Once you have received your log in details for onefile (online resources), ensure you have set up your password and accessed all the introductory information prior to the course commencing.

Costs

A deposit of £50 is required on application to secure a space on any of our courses. Any cheques are to be made payable to 'Aberdeenshire Council'. 

The cost of each course is: 

  • £300 for UKCC level 1 
  • £600 for UKCC level 2 
  • £350 for early years 
  • £150 for level 2 shallow water certification 

Final payments will be due two weeks in advance for level 1 and four weeks in advance for level 2 and early years.

Subsidies

Subsidies are available from SportScotland:

  • £75 or 40 percent of the total cost (whichever is the lowest) for UKCC L1 
  • £350 or 60 percent of the total cost (whichever is the lowest) for UKCC L2 

You can apply for these subsidies online.

Subsidies are only payable once the course has been completed and a minimum of 90 percent of the course attended. Full course fees must be paid in advance of the course regardless of you making a subsidy application.

Onefile

All Scottish Swimming courses are now run with the aid of onefile which is a form of e-portfolio software. The courses are almost entirely paperless, with the aim being to improve learner engagement and improve the learning experience. As such, candidates will require access to a laptop or tablet in order to complete the coursework and assessments.

Continual Professional Development (CPD) 

We offer Continual Professional Development (CPD) workshops for swimming teachers and coaches.

All workshops are accredited with Scottish Swimming and candidates will be registered for CPD points if they are members of Scottish Swimming. Each candidate can gain one CPD point per hour of attendance.
