Adjustments to textile recycling bank network in Aberdeenshire

The Salvation Army will adjust its clothing bank network in the coming months, which includes a gradual removal of textile banks from select Aberdeenshire Council recycling points.

Textile recycling will remain available at the council’s household recycling centres across the region and at recycling points where textile banks are provided by a different charity.

Aberdeenshire Council will also seek alternative textile recycling providers at its recycling points where The Salvation Army is gradually removing its collection banks.

Aberdeenshire Council’s recycling points are locations across the region where a selection of either glass, textiles, or small electrical items can be recycled in addition to the service available at household recycling centres.

Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL) operates clothing banks on behalf of its parent charity.

A spokesperson for SATCoL said: “Following a strategic review of our clothing bank network in response to changing market conditions, and to ensure long-term sustainability and responsible stewardship of donations, we are adjusting our clothing bank network. This change will enable us to use our resources more effectively to manage the unsustainable volumes of used textiles across the UK.

“As part of this review, a number of clothing banks will be removed. However, many other banks remain available for public use, and we continue to expand our network of more than 250 charity stores. These changes allow us to maximise fundraising capabilities, minimise costs, and redirect resources to other impactful reuse and recycling services.

“We are grateful for the continued support from members of the public, our donors and partners. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and encourage customers and donors to locate their nearest donation point and store using our easy-to-use map finder.”

Cllr Alan Turner, Chair of the council’s Infrastructure Services Committee, said: “We’d like to thank The Salvation Army for their years of providing textile recycling through our recycling points for residents in Aberdeenshire. While it will come as a disappointment for many that this service is ending, we understand that the decision was outwith their control, and we appreciate their continued commitment to supporting communities.”
