Macduff School key strengths following HMIE inspection

Macduff School and Nursery Class has been commended for its welcoming environment, strong teamwork among staff, and engaging approach to learning following an inspection by His Majesty’s Inspectors of Education (HMIE).

Inspectors spoke with pupils, parents and staff, and worked closely with school leadership.

The inspection highlighted several key strengths: Pupils were recognised as friendly, polite and proud of their achievements, demonstrating positive attitudes to learning and strong behaviour throughout the school.

Inspectors also praised the staff team, noting their collaborative approach and the effective leadership from the headteacher. This teamwork is helping to drive improvements in outcomes for children.

A strong focus on inclusion and wellbeing was identified, with staff commended for ensuring that children feel safe, valued and supported in their learning. This approach is contributing positively to pupil engagement and progress.

The report also highlighted the school’s creative and engaging curriculum, including initiatives such as “Macduff Quests” and outdoor learning. These approaches encourage pupil creativity and involvement in planning their learning, helping to enhance outcomes.

Overall, HMIE rated both learning, teaching and assessment and raising attainment and achievement as good. 

While recognising these strengths, inspectors identified areas for further improvement. These include continuing to develop consistently high-quality learning and teaching across all classes, and strengthening how the school measures the impact of interventions on pupil progress and attainment.

Macduff School Nursery Class was recognised for delivering a warm, inclusive and supportive environment for young children following a joint inspection by HM Inspectors and the Care Inspectorate in January.

Inspectors highlighted the “very good” standard of nurturing care and support, noting that children benefit from kind, responsive staff who ensure they feel safe, valued and confident in their surroundings.

Strong relationships across the setting help children to settle well and develop independence through play and learning.

The report also commended the commitment of staff to ongoing professional development, with training in areas such as child protection, first aid and nurturing approaches contributing to consistent, high-quality care.

Children were described as confident, curious and motivated learners, enjoying a range of engaging experiences including outdoor play, creative activities and real-life learning opportunities.

Areas for improvement were identified around strengthening approaches to learning, teaching and assessment, particularly in how children’s progress is recorded and used to plan next steps.
