Survey work at Aboyne Bridge

Work has started on the flood study for the Aboyne Bridge options, focusing on how construction works could affect local flooding.

For the repair option, a central support within the river would be required. For the modular bridge option, supports would be needed near the river and along a section of the southern embankment.

The study will assess the longer-term impacts of this arrangement and how it interacts with the existing flood plain.

Both options will also include consideration of possible mitigation measures.

Initial modelling is underway using online hydrometric data, historical flood information and historical maps, but further on-site investigation is needed. Our consultant, Binnies, will carry out a topographical survey of up to 50 river cross sections using boat access from tomorrow until April 14.

We have consulted the Dee Salmon Fisheries Board, local fishing beats and Scottish Natural Heritage in advance to ensure best practice and compliance with environmental constraints.

In parallel, our consultant WSP has been instructed to progress early ground investigation work. Existing borehole data from the 1930s provides a useful starting point, alongside site visits and online resources such as BGS GeoIndex and GroundSure.

This will help determine what additional intrusive investigation is required for each option.

While the historic borehole information is helpful, it does not meet current design code requirements. The new work will provide a preliminary assessment of both options and identify any further ground investigation needed.
