Education Scotland inspection highlights strengths at Ellon Primary School
An inspection of Ellon Primary School found the school to be ‘good’ in all quality indicators.
During the visit, inspectors engaged with parents, carers, and children while working with the headteacher and staff to assess the school's learning environment and overall effectiveness.
The inspection team highlighted several key strengths in the school’s work:
- Senior leaders and staff engage effectively in professional learning and use this positively to improve their own classroom practices and support children’s learning across the school. As a result, children’s learning environments are well-organised, stimulating and nurturing.
- Children are welcoming, confident and proud of their school. They are respected and valued members of the Ellon Primary School community and successfully display their school values in their play, interactions and learning.
- Senior leaders and staff check in on children’s progress in learning regularly. Together, they plan effective targeted teaching approaches to support children in aspects of their learning. This is improving attainment outcomes for children in literacy and numeracy.
- Children engage enthusiastically in a variety of clubs, committees and activities within and outwith the school. Their involvement is supporting children to develop as successful learners and make effective and positive contributions to the life and work of the school.
Headteacher Andrew Boulind said: “We are extremely pleased that HM Inspectors recognised the many strengths of our staff and pupils here at Ellon Primary School, highlighting our welcoming and confident pupils, the dedication of our staff, and the positive impact of our learning environment.
“The report reflects the hard work of our whole school community and our continued commitment to helping every child achieve their potential.”
The inspectors also identified areas for development and discussed these with the headteacher and Aberdeenshire Council:
- Senior leaders and staff should continue to take forward their plans to embed consistently high-quality approaches to learning and teaching. This should support senior leaders and teachers to better meet the varying needs of all children in their learning.
- Senior leaders should continue to raise attainment in literacy and numeracy, ensuring that staff support and challenge all children effectively.
