Mearns Academy rated ‘good’ and ‘very good’ following inspection.
Education inspectors have rated Mearns Academy as ‘good’ and ‘very good’ following a recent inspection.
The inspection team found the Laurencekirk school had positive and mutually respectful relationships across the school, supporting a calm and positive learning environment.
They said young people feel valued and ready to learn, whilst the well-respected headteacher, supported by senior leaders, has led the creation of a culture of leadership at all levels.
This culture, the report said, supports increasing numbers of staff and young people to undertake leadership roles and develop positive change in the school community.
Other strengths noted in the inspection include:
- There is a very nurturing ethos. Staff work well with partners to support the wellbeing of young people. This includes strong support for young people who may face barriers to learning and participation.
- There is a very inclusive culture in the school. Young people learn about different groups in society and there is a strong commitment to valuing and learning more about equality and diversity.
The inspectors also identified areas for development and discussed these with the headteacher and Aberdeenshire Council:
- Improve the attainment of young people, particularly as they move beyond S4.
- Focus on how they can improve challenge for young people in their learning.
