Tribute to Sir Ian Wood

Tributes have been paid by Aberdeenshire Council to businessman Sir Ian Wood following his death at the age of 84.

Born and raised in Aberdeen, Sir Ian dedicated his life to building opportunities for others.

Aberdeenshire Council co-leader Anne Stirling said: “Sir Ian was a visionary leader and a champion of education, employability and social mobility. His impact on Aberdeenshire and right across Scotland will be felt for generations.

“Through his leadership of the Wood Group, his commitment to economic development and his lifelong dedication to creating opportunities for young people, he helped shape a stronger future for countless communities.

“He devoted much of his life to helping others reach their potential through initiatives such as The Wood Foundation and Developing the Young Workforce.

“He was deeply committed to the North-east and helped shape and secure the Aberdeen City Region Deal, creating lasting benefits for the region.

“Our thoughts are with Lady Helen, his family and all those who knew and admired him.”

Sir Ian was married to Helen for 55 years, was father to Nic, Graham and Garreth, and a grandfather of seven children.

Aberdeenshire Council co-leader Stewart Adams added: “Through the Wood Foundation, established by Sir Ian and his family in 2007, he has invested in transforming the lives of young people not just here in Aberdeenshire, but those living in east Africa.

“Sir Ian’s legacy will be measured not only by his business achievements, but by the lasting impact he made on communities, education and economic growth across Scotland and beyond.

“He will be remembered for his vision, generosity and unwavering commitment to improving lives at home and around the world.

“On behalf of Aberdeenshire Council, we send our heartfelt condolences to Lady Helen, his family, friends and colleagues.”
