Two waste transfer stations to stop accepting asbestos

Aberdeenshire Council will stop accepting household asbestos at its waste transfer stations in Banchory and Ellon from Thursday 9 July following a review of public access to the sites.

The Macduff waste transfer station will continue to accept bookings for asbestos disposal from householders. The Macduff site has the size and layout to accommodate the additional controls from the review for the continued health and safety of visitors.

The service was originally introduced at the three waste transfer stations after asbestos collections were removed from household recycling centres due to low tonnage

Ultimately, the waste transfer stations in Banchory and Ellon were not used frequently enough to justify the extra health and safety considerations for asbestos—especially when licensed businesses in Aberdeenshire already offer alternative disposal routes.

The asbestos disposal service is only available by booking seven days in advance of a deposit. A note has been added to the booking system to ensure that customers are aware of the change.
