Aberdeenshire Council honours Jo Cox and reinforces message of civility in democracy
Aberdeenshire Council has marked the tenth anniversary of the murder of Jo Cox MP with a moment of reflection and a renewed commitment to respectful public discourse.
Members heard from Provost Judy Whyte before today’s full council meeting.
She said: “Jo Cox was a public servant who believed deeply in bringing people together, and in the strength of our communities. Her death was a stark reminder of the risks faced by those in public life and the devastating impact of hatred and division.
“As COSLA has reflected this week, there is no place in our democracy for abuse, intimidation or violence. Such behaviour does not strengthen debate, it silences voices, discourages participation and undermines trust in our institutions.
“Here in Aberdeenshire, as elected members, we have a shared responsibility to uphold the highest standards of conduct. Robust discussion is fundamental to democracy, but it must always be rooted in respect.”
The adoption of the Civility Charter across local government reinforces the principle that disagreement must never become personal, and that we must all play our part in setting a tone that is constructive, respectful and inclusive.
The Provost added: “Today is an opportunity not only to remember Jo Cox and reflect on her legacy, but also to reaffirm our own commitment to civility in public life, to supporting one another, and to ensuring that our democracy remains open and safe for all who serve.”
The reflection aligns with the aims of the Jo Cox Foundation’s Civility Pledge, which encourages individuals and organisations to commit to respectful dialogue, even where opinions differ.
The pledge highlights the importance of listening, challenging ideas without personal attack, and creating space for constructive debate.
The commemoration also underlines the importance of protecting those in public life and encouraging wider participation, ensuring that communities continue to be represented by a diverse range of voices.
