Positive inspection report highlights strengths at Laurencekirk Primary School and Nursery
Aberdeenshire Council has welcomed a positive inspection report from His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education (HMIE) following a visit to Laurencekirk Primary School and Nursery Class.
Inspectors visited the school in April, engaging with pupils, parents and staff, and evaluating key areas of the school’s performance.
The report highlights significant strengths, including strong leadership, a supportive and inclusive ethos, and confident, enthusiastic learners.
Inspectors praised the leadership of the headteacher and staff, noting their clear vision for improvement and ambition for all children.
The team was commended for working collaboratively to deliver high-quality experiences across the school and nursery.
Pupils were recognised for being articulate, inquisitive and proud of their school, with inspectors noting their enthusiasm for sharing learning and celebrating achievements.
The report also highlighted the school’s welcoming and inclusive environment, where positive relationships between staff and pupils help foster a strong sense of community.
Children were described as feeling happy, supported and motivated to succeed.
Opportunities for developing leadership skills among pupils were also commended, with children actively participating in clubs, committees and groups that build skills for learning, life and work.
Within the school’s enhanced provision, inspectors noted that well-organised and engaging learning activities are supporting children effectively, particularly in developing social and communication skills.
Overall, the school received positive evaluations:
• Leadership of change: Good
• Learning, teaching and assessment: Good
• Ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion: Very good
• Raising attainment and achievement: Good
The nursery class was also rated good across all areas assessed, including curriculum, learning and teaching, and wellbeing.
Areas for improvement were identified around strengthening approaches to evaluating school performance, continuing to enhance learning and teaching consistency, and ensuring appropriate levels of challenge for all pupils, particularly in literacy and numeracy.
In the nursery, staff will further develop approaches to setting clear learning targets for children.
