Path closures and project updates

On this page you can view details of path closures and updates on path project works in Aberdeenshire.

East of Cullen to Findlater Castle Coast Path

Improvement work on the Coast Path from the east of Cullen to Findlater Castle is scheduled to take place from 2nd to 31st March 2026. During this time the path will remain open but users are advised to pay attention to any warning signage while using this section.

Hill of Hatton Wood, Hatton of Fintray

A temporary diversion is in place for a section of the core path which runs through the Hill of Hatton Wood, Hatton of Fintray.

The temporary diversion is due to forestry works and is in place from 4th February to 4th June 2026. During this time, please adhere to the safety signage on site.

Waterside to Newburgh Roadside path

Work to improve part of the roadside path north of Newburgh to the Waterside Bridge began on 24th November 2025. The work is expected to be completed once weather conditions allow. The path will be closed for this time and 2-way temporary traffic lights will be in place for traffic management. 

Bullers of Buchan coastal path

Due to the recent storm damage to the footbridge a section of the coastal path at Bullers of Buchan has been closed. 

Fraserburgh: Wine Tower to Four Winds Shelter

The path from the Wine Tower in Fraserburgh to the Four Winds Shelter is closed due to significant erosion on the shore, and the slip is very close to the path edge. This may affect the path if damaged by any further storms. Due to the potential for further rock falls and injury we have signposted both ends of the path with path closed signs to prevent access.

Crovie to Gardenstown, Sneuk path

The Sneuk path between Crovie and Gardenstown has been closed due to significant rock fall and the potential for further rock falls and injury while crossing.

Suspension Bridge (Shakin Brig) from Edzell Woods to Edzell

Storm Babet has caused structural damaged to the pedestrian suspension bridge along the path leading to Edzell from Edzell Woods, therefore for public safety the bridge has been closed.

Battlehill Wood, Huntly

Battlehill Wood currently has an area of storm-damaged trees in the midsection of the wood. While the circular path has been partially cleared to allow access through the fallen trees, it remains restricted around the northern section. The smaller circular route is fully accessible. Efforts are currently underway to appoint contractors who will address and clear the remaining storm-damaged area at Battlehill.

Formartine and Buchan Way

Upgrade works on the Formartine and Buchan Way North of Ellon between Auchterellon access and U109B road crossing (PDF 777KB) start 2nd June up until 31st March 2026. Please note there is no suitable alternative route. 

Deeside Way

Access improvements at track crossings will be carried out at six locations between Park Quarry and Ballater, the works are expected to run from 18th February to 31st March 2026.

Path surfacing upgrades are taking place between 18 February and 31 March 2026, requiring temporary closures on the following sections:

Old railway line east of Aboyne

New path works will be carried out on the section of the old railway line path east of Aboyne (PDF 342KB). During periods between 18 February and 31 March 2026, this path section will be temporarily closed.

Aberdeenshire Coastal Path

Following damage caused by extreme weather, sections of coast path have become difficult, and in some cases dangerous, to use. The council is reviewing the condition of these paths and therefore not currently promoting the Aberdeenshire Coastal Path.

Cowie to Stonehaven Golf Course upper cliff path

After past and more recent storm damage the path width has narrowed along two sections of the upper cliff path from the golf course lay-by/picnic area (above Cowie), to St Mary’s church.

Cowie to Stonehaven Golf Course lower cliff path

After assessing a rockfall on the lower Cowie to upper golf course cliff path link, in the interests of public safety, the path has been closed until further notice.
